Frequently Asked Questions
What is "concrete engraving"?
Using
diamond tipped blades of various widths, we make a
very shallow cut, usually about
⅛ inch
deep. The groove may be straight, arced or wavy,
depending on the design. Of course we need a design
to follow and there are really no limits there. If
it can be drawn, it can be engraved. Designs can be
bold or delicate. There are also many popular
templates that can be used in your design, or a
special custom logo can be created. Two examples
are the huge engravings for the Razorbacks of the
University of Arkansas and the Tricentennial of the
City of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Remember; the
design is in the concrete, not on it!
What condition does my concrete need to be in?
We
do
not
repair
concrete.
We
make
it
an
asset
to
your
property.
Therefore
it
needs
to
be
in
fairly
good
shape
without
major
cracks
or
subsidence.
Age
is
not
a
problem
although it should be at least 45 days old for
proper curing. Smaller
cracks
usually
disappear in the design and there are companies
that will level your concrete for you. If you look
at the photos, you'll notice that we ignore
expansion joints when we create our designs and
that colors and engraving will lead your eyes away
from them. If you've been thinking of replacing
concrete simply because of annoying cracks, think
again!
What is "concrete staining"?
First,
it is not a paint on the surface of the concrete.
It will never peel away. It is the result of a
chemical reaction between the stain and the
minerals in the concrete which is aided by an
etching procedure. The stains are available in many
colors either solid or translucent, muted or
bright. When it is properly sealed it will remain
for many years.
Is the staining similar to "faux finishing"?
It can be. How daring do want to be? What will the
neighbors think? Nearly any technique you can do on
a wall can be done on concrete and then some. You
don't have the dripping problem but concrete can be
very inconsistent across the same slab. That can
make it challenging and rewarding. We're willing if
you are.
What is the process?
Depending
on the size and complexity of the project, it will
usually take from 5 to 10 days from start to
finish. Larger projects will take longer and for
exterior projects , Mother Nature can be a factor.
Landscaping and buildings are shielded from any
overspray during the whole process. Interior work
can be done year round. The concrete is power
washed and degreased if necessary. If required, the
concrete surface will be etched and then thoroughly
cleaned again. Next we stain the concrete when
we're sure it's dry. After the stain has thoroughly
dried we begin the engraving process. Once the
engraving is finished, the concrete is thoroughly
cleaned yet again to remove any debris and finally,
the project is protected with a durable matt or
high gloss acrylic sealer.
Are the chemicals safe enough to be used indoors?
Everything
we use indoors is water-based for low odor and easy
cleanup. That's good for you, us and the
environment.
What are some of the advantages?
➢
You
already have the concrete!
➢ You won't be tripping over engraved bricks or stones because they won't heave with the weather changes!
➢ The design will last as long as the concrete it's engraved in.
➢ There will be very little disturbance to your property during the process.
➢ Engraved and stained concrete is an excellent flooring option for those with carpet allergies.
